WSCL
Fun in KC
ASCE held its Zone III (Midwestern) Conference in Kansas City, Missouri,
February 1st to 3rd and our Chapter was fortunate
enough to send three delegates. Cindy
Safin, Melissa White, and Jeremy Butkovich attended the Workshop for
Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL), which was held at the Conference.
The WSCL was a chance for leaders from ASCE Chapters across the
Midwest to meet each other, exchange ideas, and learn what it takes to
run a successful ASCE Chapter. Activities
included individual Chapter presentations, focus sessions on specific
aspects of Chapter organization, an index card structure-building
competition, and many excellent speakers.
Perhaps the most noteworthy of these speakers was ASCE President
Gerry Schwartz, who spoke on the challenges facing all civil engineers
after September 11th, as well as the danger of pickles (you
had to be there).
Clad
in their “Super CE” bar crawl t-shirts, our delegation was quite the
fashion trendsetter. It
seemed like everyone wanted to get their hands on one of the posh T’s.
They also met a group of Bradley students, and discussed the
possibility of a joint banquet with Bradley, Illinois, and the local
section of ASCE. After all
the fun at this year’s WSCL, we will certainly send a much larger
group next year. The Zone
III Conference is in Dallas, and you just might get to go if you join
the Executive Board!

The
Shadow Knows!
So it’s not exactly the same as the superhero Shadow, but you could
still wear your “Super CE” shirts.
Shadow applications are available online at www.uiuc.edu/ro/asce.
You can also check out what past shadow participants thought. The
company data base is still not updated, so email Gen (glong@uiuc.edu)
if you need help picking a company.
Otherwise you can be matched up with a company based on your
primary and location preference. If you want to shadow over spring
break, they are due by Feb. 22nd. Shadows can be arranged at
any time, so if you would like to shadow, but you have plans for break
already, email Gen to set up a more convenient time.
