The Run-Down on Meeting #3:
Dr. Shiraz
Tayabji, Civil Engineer with a B.S. from University of East Africa and M.S. and
Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, will be speaking at the third general
meeting. Dr. Tayabji works to implement technologies for highway and
airfield concrete pavements and has also been actively involved in design,
construction, testing and rehabilitation of concrete pavements. He currently works as Project Manager for two
multi-year, multi-team contracts funded by the Federal Highway
Administration. These projects both aim
to improve long-term performance of pavements and implement technology transfer
activities for concrete pavements.
Dr. Tayabji will discuss the current practices for design
and construction of concrete pavements in the US and directions for future
enhancements to the concrete pavement technologies. The goal is to obtain 40+ years of initial
low-maintenance service life for concrete. He will also present highlights of
his recent visits to concrete pavement construction projects in India. The
Indian Government initiated a $12 billion, 10-year National Highway Development
Plan (NHDP) to upgrade India’s highway network. The upgraded highway network
will link the country's major cities, ports and regions with more than 8,100
miles of four-or-more-lane highways by 2009. A large portion of the upgrade
highways will include concrete pavements, which are being constructed using,
state-of-the-art paving equipment and concrete plants.
We Need YOU to Donate!
During
the week of November 15-19, ASCE will sponsor a canned food drive, and in order
to make a big impact, ASCE needs all of you to help. Here’s what to do: drop canned goods and
non-perishable items off at the designated donation box in the lobby of Newmark
AND bring a can to the general meeting!
All donations will most likely go to the Eastern Illinois Foodbank,
although petitions for other worthy recipients will be accepted.
Professor Lunches
The first professor lunches took place the week of November 8, but
if more professors and students want lunch courtesy of ASCE, check out the
website for more info. The list of
professors is on the site, along with the ASCE officer in charge of those lunches.
The professors currently volunteering for lunches are: Pete Lenzini, Leslie
Struble, Liang Liu, Imad Al-Qadi, and Christopher Barkan. Email the officer (whose name appears under
that of their assigned professor) if you are interested in lunch.
Check It Out!
The ASCE display case has been
updated. Check out the super cool new
display case and let an officer know if there is anything to add!
