It’s All in the Shadow…

Seeking a more professional edge?  Want to know more about “real world” engineering? ASCE’s Shadow an Engineer Program gives you the chance to see what its really like out there and possibly get a job while you’re at it. ASCE will contact an engineering firm in the area of your choosing so you can spend a day with a professional in the field during winter or spring break.

A Message from the Big Guy:

Welcome back to another semester at the good old U of I. Or, if this happens to be your first semester on campus, welcome to the good ol' U of I. I'm Jeremy Butkovich, and I just happen to be the President of our ASCE chapter. The executive board and I have been working hard to plan a whole host of events for your enjoyment (and enlightenment) this semester.
We hope they will give you a chance to meet others in the Department, and advance your knowledge of civil engineering. Keep you eyes peeled for further issues of this newsletter or visit our website to keep yourself informed. Best of luck to you this semester, and I hope to see you around campus, around Newmark, or--better yet--at one of our ASCE events.

                    Sincerely,

              Jeremy Butkovich

COMPETITION CORNER

Two of ASCE’s most popular competitions are the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe.  ASCE is always looking for new members to add to the teams, so here is a little info on how you can get involved:

Concrete Canoe Cookout!
Come to an informal meeting to meet some of the people involved with the Boneyard Yacht Club. We are going to have tons of burgers and hot wings and of course some vegitarian items for you veggie lovers. So come on out and see what the team is all about. Date: Tuesday, Sept. 16. Time: 5:30 . Location: 508 E. Healey St. Apt. 212 . Just email khatcher@uiuc.edu for
directions if unsure.

Steel Bridge : Success was definitely in the air last semester for ASCE’s Steel Bridge team.  They came in 15th overall at the national competition, which ties the best finish our chapter has ever had at nationals. They also took home a plaque for 2nd Place in Aesthetics, which is the first plaque our chapter has ever received from nationals.  This year’s Steel Bridge team will be more than happy to share the glory with you, so if you are interested in designing, fabricating and constructing a steel bridge check the web to see how you can get involved!
